Report: Construction of Contents Page

To begin creating my contents page; I first had to create a new blank workspace. To do this I selected the “File” option at the very top of the screen, this opens a drop down option tool bar. From this I select the “New…” option.

Once I had right clicked the “New”, see above, it automatically opened another window in which I could adjust the settings of my blank work space. As magazine is going to be the general A4 size of a general magazine I chose the paper to be “International” and the size to be “A4″. Once I had chosen my settings I pressed the “Ok” button.

This automatically opened a new blank workspace.

The first thing I did when creating my contents page was to create to black box outs at the top and bottom on the page. I did this by first selecting the “Draw Rectangle” tool, this can be located on the movable tool bar usually located to the left of the screen.

I then right clicked were I wanted the first box out the start on the page, a small frame appeared that allowed me to drag the sides until I was happy with the size of the box out.

Once I had created the two box outs the page appeared like so:

This is only going to be used as a guide line and should not appear on my final contents page.
My next step was to open the main image I wanted to used for my contents. I did this by again selecting the “File” option found in the very top tool bar at the head of the screen, this automatically opened a drop down option bar. From this I chose the “Open” option.

This automatically opened another window, this window allowed me to search through all the documents on my mac so that I could find and select the image I wanted to open. Once I had found this Image I select it, this highlights the image and image details. I then right click the “Open” button at the bottom of the window.

This then opened the image I wanted to use in another window next to the workspace screen I am using.

I then dragged the layer containing the images that I wanted to use over to the workspace window. This put a much smaller version of the images on to the workspace window, in their own layers so that I can move them and change their size with out effecting the rest of the window.

Because of the size of the images I then had to resize the images I did this by selecting the “Edit” option, this can be located in the tool bar at the very top of the screen. This automatically opened a drop down tool bar, from which I selected the “Transform” option. This again opened a drop down tool bar, from this I selected my final option: “Scale”.

This placed a small frame around the image, which allowed me to drag the sides until the image was the size and shape I wanted it to be. I also turned off the two black box outs I previously made so that I could see the images.

I then selected the “Grab” option, this is located on the movable tool bar usually seen to the left of the screen.

I then moved the images to the place on the screen that I wanted them to be.

I quickly decided that this looked odd, because the mouth was out of shape and did not look like a face so I turned off the layer containing the lips. The image now looked like so:

Even though this is different from my original design I like this as much and so I will be keeping the contents page like this.
My next step was to create the mast head for the page. I began this process by selecting the “Text” option, this can also be found on the movable tool bar to the left of the screen.

I chose to use the font “Brush Script OTT” and have it red. The size of the font is 72.

I placed the text one letter at a time down the left hand side of the page. It looked like so:

I then began to create the other half of the mast head. I did this by selecting the “Text” option, this can also be found on the movable tool bar to the left of the screen.

I kept the “Brush Script OTT” as the font and the size as 72. But I changed the colour to black, this is because I did not want to over use red on the page.

I then placed each letter of the text down the right hand side of the page, in the same way as I did with the previous half of mast head, this looked like so;

My next step was to add the magazine name at the very bottom of the page this is very small as it is not the most important thing on the page. I began by selecting the “Text” option, this can also be found on the movable tool bar to the left of the screen.

I kept the “Mix Tape” as “Brush Script OTT”as I had through out the entire of the magazine. The size I changed to size 12, this made it the smallest thing on the page because it was the least important. I chose to use the colour red for the text, again this is something I used through out the magazine.

I zoomed in to the text. It looked like so:

I then added the page number to the text. I did this by selecting the “Text” option, this can also be found on the movable tool bar to the left of the screen.

I chose to use the “diodot” font, because it was plain and standard. The font size was 10. I made the colour plain black. This is showing continuity with the double page spread inside of my magazine.

My next step was to open one of the smaller images I wanted to used for my contents. I did this by again selecting the “File” option found in the very top tool bar at the head of the screen, this automatically opened a drop down option bar. From this I chose the “Open” option.

This automatically opened another window, this window allowed me to search through all the documents on my mac so that I could find and select the image I wanted to open. Once I had found this Image I select it, this highlights the image and image details. I then right click the “Open” button at the bottom of the window.

This then opened the image I wanted to use in another window next to the workspace screen I am using.

I then dragged the layer containing the image across to the workspace i am using to create my contents page, this automatically created a new layer for the image. The image appeared much smaller on the contents page.

As the image was far to small I resized it. To do this I had to select the “Edit” option, this is shown at the top of the screen in the very top tool bar. One of the last things I did was to add the main bulk of the text. I began by adding the headings. I did this by selecting the “Text” option, this can also be found on the movable tool bar to the left of the screen.

I chose to use “Chalkboard” font, this shows continuity with the front page. The text is size 14. And the colour plain black, taking advantage of the age old juxtaposition black on white.

The text looked like this:

I then had to add the band name, I did this as separate text because I wanted the band name to be bigger then the other text. I began by adding the headings. I did this by selecting the “Text” option, this can also be found on the movable tool bar to the left of the screen.

I chose to use “Chalkboard” font, this shows continuity with the front page. The text is size 24. And the colour plain black, taking advantage of the age old juxtaposition black on white.

I then added the page number to this by selecting the “Text” option, this can also be found on the movable tool bar to the left of the screen.

I chose to use the “Prince town let” font again, as this would show continuity with the other page numbers, put on the images on the contents page. The font size was “30″ this was so it can be easily visible on the page. I chose to have the colour as red, as this is linked to the magazine name and provides a nice splash of colour to break up the black and white.

The text then looked like this:

I repeated this process until I had the entire of the main text completed, this then looked like this:

I then had to save my contents page. I did this by selecting the “File” located in the tool bar at the very top of the screen, this then opened a drop down option bar, from which I chose the “Save As…” option.

When I right clicked this option, it opened another window. In this window I could name and chose the option in which to save my file.

Once I pressed the “Save” button, my image was saved.

GREAT SCOTT

Opening Paragraph:
With the release of their new album “Throw Your Soul Down” just one week away. Coming in to shops 20th April. The local lads of Great Scott agree to get personal with our journo Scarlet over some of their favorite grub; the all mighty Wings Meal.

Main bulk of text (Interview):
We will start with the most important question first: Who are your influences?
James: I think that we all have similar and different influences. I for example have always been influenced by Jim Morrison and The Doors, something I feel comes across in my style of singing. But in the same breath I also have other great artists to thank for inspiration; Coheed and Cambris, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Hole , Sonic Youth and many others.
Dan: I am very much inspired by: Incubus and Led Zepplin.
Smurf: I must admit to being an indie boy at heart. Oasis, PAul Weller and The Jam being some of my biggest inspiration. The scan be heard in some of our tracks. Such as;”The Pirate Song” and “the Blues One” .
Tom: I have some quite heavy metal influences in my life, MEtallic being an absolute faviourt.

I must ask, what inspired the album cover?
Tom: *Reaching across the table to my wings meal and picking up some chicken* This, this spectacular piece of meat right here. Thats what inspired our album cover.
Dan: *Laughs* Yes, indeed it was our love from the Wings MEal that made us used a Wings Meal box as the cover of our debut album. We felt as though the Wings Meal had been apart of our lives, from the before we began the band. I remember us bonding over a Wings Meal in the very start of the college year. We always has a Wings Meal after rehearsal, so it seemed only natural to pay our respects in this way.

How did you all meet and form a band, give me the Great Scott life history?Smurf: We all meet in Harlow College, studying a national diploma in Music. So quite naturally our conversations revolved around what bands we listened to and what music we liked to play. Although we all have different passions a lot of the stuff we like are the same and so our beautiful friendship was born here.
James: As a part of the course we had to play i different line ups and explore different music. Once day I was lucky enough to get stuck with this lot and we found the music just followed. Somthing about us as a band just fit. Almost like a love story.So we gave it a go, got a few gigs and really enjoyed it.
Dan: And here we are now

When did you first realize you were such a massive success?
Tom: I don’t think I have realized that just quite yet, I do wake up some days and think “Yeah man, we have made it: Record Deal, First Album, Loads of Fans” but even those days it still seems very much like a dream we are half way to achieving.
James: I think the main reason we still don’t feel like a massive success as you say is that we haven’t had a second to take it all in yet. Straight after recording the album we went back to giging. After the release next week, we have a massive tour booked around America. Maybe after that it might finally hit us.

REPORT: Manipulation of small image front cover

To create a small image for the front cover, I first had to create a blank workspace to begin work. I did this by selecting the “File” option, this can be found in the very top left hand corner of the screen. When selected this opens a drop down tool bar, from which I selected the “New” option.

When this is selected a new window appears on the screen, which allows me to change the settings for my new workspace window.

I chose to have an A4 sized window, even though I am well aware I will be cutting it down to a smaller size when I have finished manipulating the image.

Once I had created a new window, I needed to open the original image that I wanted to use for the small image. I did this by selecting the ”File” option, as when creating the blank workspace, but instead choosing the “Open” option from the drop down tool bar.

When selected this opens another window, in which I can search through all the files on the mac to find the file that i want to use.

When I had opened the image of Dave, Andy and Harry for my small image on my front cover; it was shown in a separate window to the new window I had created.

I then dragged the layer containing the image on to the new workspace.

This image did not fit the new workspace, before changing the size of the image I rotated the canvas and the image so that it appeared in a horizontal position, this is partly because it will be seen on the page in this way.

Once I had rotated the image, the workspace appeared like so:

As you can see the image still doesn’t fit the workspace, so I now decided to change the size of the image. To do this I selected the “Edit” option located at the very top of the screen. This then opened a drop down option tool bar, from which I selected the “Transform” option. This again opened another drop down tool bar, from this I made my final selection of “Scale”.

I was quite happy with the image, as it is only going to be a small in comparison to other things on the front page, I did however want to add a little bit of noise. I did this by selecting the “Filter” option, this is shown at the very top of the screen. This then opened a drop down tool bar, from this tool bar I selected the “Noise” option. This again opened a drop down tool bar, which I then selected the “Add Noise”option.

This automatically opened another window, in which I could select the specifications for the noise I wanted to add. I choose to add 3.5 noise to the image.

I then had to save the image so that I could use it on the front page. I did this by first selecting “File” option, this can be seen on the tool bar at the very top of the screen. Once selected this opened a drop down tool bar, from which I chose the “Save As…” option.

Once this is selected another window automatically opens, in this window I can name the image and choose the type of file. I chose to use the JPEG type of image, this is because there is only one layer only and it would save room on my mac.

I then pressed the “Save” button, this closed the open window and replaced it with a smaller window. In this window I could change the options of the JPEG before I save it.

I then pressed the “Ok” button, saving my image.

Contents Page 2

Background:
There is no background image, as there is on the front page of a magazine, this is not a rule of the construction of a contents page but rather something the editor of this magazine felt they wanted to do, this may be a result of the use of a large amount of smaller images. There is however still a background, around three edges of the page are a black and white checkered effect, there is then a raised white box out. It is in this box out that all. but the heading of the contents page, the information is exclusivly on. Thus making the box out look as though it is a blank white page. The heading covers both sections of the background. The use of the two different types of background breaks up the dullness of plain white, this is a good effect.

Images:
There are six images on this page, the images advertise the features within the magazine. They are a numberof different sizes, angles, contrasts and colours. As this is a specialist magazine, some of the images can be of equipment only. This is not something that I could do within my magazine as I am not creating a specialist magazine, I am looking to use numerous small images on my contents page to show the features within my magazine as well. Each of the small images have a small red box out in the corner, within this box out is the page number. This is quite quirky as the corner of the box out is curved so the edge is not sharp.

Mast head:
The mast head is not at the very top of the page. It is however the largest text on the page, immediatly distingishing it as the most important thing on the page. The text is all caps, bold and black, this also helps to draw the readers attention to it. It is also on a white background as this is a natural, perhaps overused but effective juxtaposition. Intrestingly the mast head is not the usual “Contents Page” as I have seen in many other contents pages I have researched, but is the name of the magazine, this is a way of advertising the magazine to the reader. If they repetivly see the name of the magazine they are more likly to remember it and think of it next time they are looking to purchase a magazine.

Heading:
It is the heading in the case of this magazine that tell us what page we are looking at, rather then the masthead. This heading can be broken in to two parts; the first, as i just said informs us what page we are on: “Contents”, the second is arguably the pugs on the page: “01/07″. The first part of this heading is in white text and on a red box out, this has a simular juxtaposition as the black over white we saw in the masthead, drawing attention to being the more important part of the heading, even though the actual text is smaller. The second part of the heading as previously stated can also be seen as the pugs of the contents page. Unlike the first part the text is ina deep red colour, having less of a contrast with the bright red box out it is on. This is larger, even though less important, this could be so that the reader can see it easily due to the close match of colours used.

Sub-heading:
The sub-headings are both on the left hand side of the page, both of them introduce the listed features within the magazine. It is interesting that they are the complete oposite in colour schemes to each other. The first is red text on a white box out, whilst the second is white text on a red box out, this is a nice juxtaposition that also fits in with the colour scheme quite well. The lettering is lower and upper case, this shows continuity with the heading.

Features:
As with the heading and sub-heading the features can be broken in to two sections. These are shown quite clearly on the contents page underneath seperate headings, shown above in the sub-headings. The two sections can also been quite clearly seen above as one is on a white box out and the other on a red, thet also have different text sizes and colour. The first section has text that is black and bold, again using the age old juxtaposition of black on white. The second section has text that is white and bold, this is a nice contrast of the bright red box out. The font used is very bold and stands out a lot on the given backgrounds, this is a nice effect as it draws the reader to it on the page and ultimatly the features are what sell the magazine.

Above we see a sample of the main bulk of text used on the contents page of this magazine. It is plain black and not a bold font, this is because it is not an important part of the page. Its purpose it to merely exapand apon the titles shown in the features (above). It is unlikly that a reader will look here first to see if they should buy the magazine or not, although this may provide a further selling point. Some of the text is written in italics, this is generally to identify a name of something, in the above extract it is to identify the name of the magazine. The text is not in all caps this is to show that it is not the most important thing on the page again. This is further shown in the size of the text, being one of the smallest things on the page one can only assume this ment the editor not to deem it important.

Page numbers:
As can be seen above the page number are also broken in to two sections, these are also identifiable by the different in colour and size as well as the different colour of background. The first section fo page numbers shown above have a black and bold font on a red box out, this can be seen with the second section of features. The black on red is also a classical juxtaposition that is used nicely along side the white on red of the features. This is a good use of colour and shows continuity with the colour scheme. As with the font size for the features the font size for the page numbers is smaller then the other section, this again shows continuity. The second section of page numbers as I have already said are made up from larger text, the text is also red and bold this completes the colour scheme that both of the sections of features consist of something red, black and white. This shows a lot of continuity, it also stops the contents page from looking too busy as it simular colours, so does not look over worked.

Tag:
This tag has a drop shadow, this is inplace for two reasons: the first is so that it has a rasied effect as if it has been stamped in the page, giving it a sense of autheticity, the second is so that the text does not have to chnage colour when it is placed on the white background. The stamp itself expresses that this is “EXCLUSIVE!” to the magazine making it a major selling point as this is something that can not be found in any other magazine. The text is in bold, all caps this helps it to stand out on the page and makes it importants to the reader from a visual point of view. It is placed next to a feature, but the main bulk of this tag is on an image. This untidy look shows gives this an authentic stamp look as though it has been placed on to the page last and in a hurried mannar.

Tag:
This tag is a addition symbol, this is positive advertising as it is potentially adding more for the reader to have. This is gold, which makes it stand out from the page as it is only this and the outline that this is joined to that is gold on the whole page. This draws the attention to the red box out it surrounds and thus the contents, showing it to be a strong selling point in the eyes of the editor of the magazine.

What I like about this magazine and may incorporate in to my own design of a contents page:
I like the effect on the background, of a small section down the side of the page having a small effect to break up the plainess of blank white as a background, something that is very tempting to use. As well as this I like the use of a number of small images, that correspond with the features of the magazine. This is something that I will try to encorporate within my own design on my own contents page. The well though out colour scheme, that is used through out but does not appear over used due to the editors choice of changing the pattern in which the colour scheme is used, is very good. It is simple yet effective, this strategedy is something I hope to include.

Pricing Questionnaire Evaluation

I conducted a pricing questionnaire at Harlow College; this meant the majority of people who partook in my survey were students aged between 16 and 19 years old although there were some lecturers that also took my survey. From this questionnaire I decided to price my magazine at £3.50. Out of the list of prices I included in my survey 60% of the participants choose this price as they felt it was a fair price, although not the cheapest price on the list. From small follow up interviews with some of the participants I found that the contents of the magazine greatly effects the price the audience would pay for it, from what I have planned to include within my magazine most of the participants felt that £2.50, the cheapest price on the survey, would not be fair. Many indicated that they would be unlikely to buy the cheapest magazine off the shelf because they would assume the contents to be inferior to a more costly magazine.
Although the majority of participants indicated that they would pay more for a magazine that had a free gift such as a CD or a special gig guide, they nearly all said they would not pay extra for free posters. This is because free posters of featured artists have almost become expected by the audience. I felt this was particularly interesting as most magazines still advertise the free posters on the front cover of the magazine as though it is a special gift. The expectancy of free posters makes the amount of 100% positive advertising available to the editors on the front page very hard without them including a second free gift such as a CD; this within itself is not the best position to take as it could result in the same way as the free posters as a special gift did.
The majority of people surveyed said the first thing they noticed about a magazine was the background image, in the case of music magazines this means very often the featured artists. The background image is nearly always related to or directly of the kicker of the magazine.
